For school sports for better

ISF and CAF welcome luncheon – As it happened.

In brief

The five schools that represented Uganda in China and Zanzibar were treated to a luncheon at Hotel Imperial Royale. David Katende the Assistant General Secretary National Council of Sports represented Hon. Peter Ogwang State Minister of Sports as chief guest on the occasion.

The celebratory occasion that occurred at Imperial Royale Hotel was attended by Ministry of Education and Sports and USSSA officials, Justus Mugisha USSSA President, Al- Said president USPA, Deborah Basekanabyo – ASSHU, gallant athletes and the media.

David Katende, chief guest appreciated the Secondary School Sports Association and extended a warning to schools that form clubs in school.

“There are four aspects in sports; practicing, participating, Performance and recognition. Therefore I would like to thank USSSA for taking us through these steps and now we are at the point of recognizing these athletes. To the students, use your time in school to reach the best version of yourself. Schools should desist from creating clubs inside schools. You find a school and students refer to some students as “ballers” Are ballers not students?”

Groovy melodies from the traditional dance troupe engraved the ceremony, with some students showcasing extra their extra abilities in dance before the guests. Video

The USSSA president, Justus Mugisha emphasized the need to take very many students for International engagements at this level.

“While in Dalian, Uganda had the second highest number of teams just two behind China who were the hosts. The main reason is that in sport, usually from about a thousand athletes, you may find that only three make it to the very highest level. Therefore it’s very important to take a pool such that we can have the very best.”

Hajji Lwembawo Hussein who was the head of delegation to Zanzibar at the CAF Schools Football championship

“In Zanzibar, I realized that we need to adjust in the ways we organize our competitions especially for the under 15′ as I realized we could have performed even much better. The girls were used to playing in full pitches, playing long balls but there short passes were required since they were playing in a much smaller space and playing a shorter time.”

The school captains were full of praise and appreciation for the Ministry and USSSA for the opportunity to represent the country at the International stage as it brings invaluable experience to them at a tender age.
