Hope SS Watoto – Brave League champions.

Overview

USSSA joined hands with the Reach A Hand as Hope Secondary School Watoto were crowned champions of the second edition of the Brave Girls Tournament Hope SS beat God Cares School 1-0 to dethrone Elite High School -Entebbe that won the first edition.

Brave Girls tournament was organized by Reach a Hand Foundation in collaboration with the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association ( USSSA) for technical aspects at International University of East Africa – Grounds with an aim of showcasing the stigma surrounding stereotypical beliefs in sports.

Fourteen girls’ football teams participated in the 7-aside format of play tournament played by in the Under -18 category.

Hope SS Watoto beat God Cares courtesy of Alice Ayo’s strike to scoop a giant trophy together with six millions prize money on top of the silverware while the second placed bagged one million. Runners up God Cares SS pocketed shs. 3,000,000 whilst Exodus College took home a million shillings.

Some of the schools that participated include Luzira SS, Bishop Cyprian Kihangire, Elite High School (defending champions), Boston High School, Exodus, Golden High School, Alliance High School Nansana among others.

Elite High School -Entebbe were unsuccessful in the fight to defend their title having failed to make it past the group stages. Elite High School lost 2-1 to Bishop Cyprian Kihangire which dented their title defence hopes.

Other partners included Imara Girls Foundation, SRHR Alliance Uganda, Watoto Wasoka, UNESCO, The Girl Child and her long walk to freedom, International University of East Africa (IUEA), 10 & bold, FOWODE, Imago Dei Fund, Planned Parenthood, Eddy Kenzo Foundation, Sauti Media Hub, NBS Sport, Movit and Aquafina, among others.

Founder of Reach A Hand Humphrey Nabimanya lauded all the participating teams and saluted all the supportive partners. He emphasized the relevance of this tournament in the right upbringing of the girl child.

“We managed to hold the second edition of the Brave Girls football league. I thank the teams that took part and all the partners we worked with. This is just the second edition and the Brave Girls League will move a long away. There is need to value girls education, empower girls, help young girls speak out against the vices that affect them and also reduce on the number of school drop outs due to early pregnancies” Nabimanya stated.
