The USSSA Capacity Building Program, which kicked off on February 10, 2025, at Kabalega College Masindi, came to a successful close on Saturday, February 15, 2025. The program, which drew over 104 participants from the Bunyoro region, aimed to equip students, teachers, and community members with skills in officiating games.

The five-day program offered three courses: Football Refereeing, Netball Umpiring, and Volleyball Refereeing. A total of 54 participants enrolled in Football Refereeing, while 31 and 19 participants joined Netball Umpiring and Volleyball Refereeing, respectively.

During the closing ceremony, participants were awarded certificates of attendance, marking their successful completion of the program. The Masindi Sports Officer, Mr. Isingoma Joseph, who served as the program coordinator, expressed his gratitude to USSSA and the Ministry of Education for their efforts in developing the sports sector in the region.

Mr. Isingoma Joseph noted that the program would not only enhance sports development but also reduce spending costs in schools, as the trained participants can now officiate school activities, such as inter-class competitions.

Aheebwa Nelson, a Football Refereeing participant, echoed the sentiments, saying, “We’ve long heard about this program being implemented elsewhere, but we’re thrilled it’s finally in Bunyoro. We deeply appreciate USSSA for bringing this initiative to our zone – it’s a great opportunity.”

The Masindi District Sports Association Executive Committee Member, Mr. Wabyona Moses, who serves as the District Secretary, was in attendance and participated in the program. He promised the participants that they would be given the opportunity to officiate the Masindi Municipality and District Games, emphasizing that recognizing and utilizing their skills is essential.

“It will look shameless if we don’t recognize our products,” Mr. Wabyona Moses said, highlighting the importance of empowering and supporting local talent.

The successful conclusion of the USSSA Capacity Building Program marks a significant milestone in promoting sports development and capacity building in the Bunyoro region. The program’s impact is expected to be felt in the region’s sports sector, with the trained participants set to make a positive contribution to the development of sports in their communities.
