The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) is celebrating a major milestone in its capacity-building journey as referee Wasswa Balikanda, a product of its referee training program, has been appointed to officiate at the CAF African Schools Football Championship 2025 in Ghana
Wasswa, who was trained under the USSSA capacity-building initiative in December 2022 at Kibuli, will take charge as the center referee in the high-profile group stage match between Algeria and South Africa.
It is vital to note that Aslam was part of the set of referees that officiated at the CAF African Schools CECAFA Qualifiers in December 2024 that took place at St, Mary’s Kitende – Uganda.
Therefore his selection comes as no surprise but a reward of his work, talent and enormous potential,
Aslam’s journey from a trainee to the international spotlight serves as an inspiration to many young referees in Uganda who aspire to rise through the ranks.
His appointment is also a nod to USSSA’s continuous commitment to holistic sports development—not just for players, but for coaches, officials, referees and young reporters.
The CAF African Schools Football Championship is a key platform for showcasing the best of school football talent across the continent, and having a Ugandan referee at the helm of such a crucial match reflects the Uganda’s growing stature in African youth football.
With Uganda being represented by two teams, St. Noa Girls and St. Mary’s Boarding School Kitende in the girls and boys football category, Wasswa Aslam holds Uganda’s flag in officiation as does John Musinguzi in the Young Reporters Program.
Wasswa follows footsteps of another Ugandan teenage sensation Ojilong who officiated at the CAF African School Championship finals last year in Zanzibar.
