The FEASSA International Sports Symposium 2025 officially opened today at Golf Club Hotel, Kakamega, bringing together key stakeholders in school sports from across East Africa and beyond.
The two-day symposium, running from August 20th to 21st, is being held under the theme “School Sports: From Playing Fields to Economic Fields.”
Day One featured rich discussions on the transformative role of school sports in fostering education, youth empowerment, gender equality, safe guarding and economic development.
Delegations from Uganda, hosts Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and Ivory Coast actively participated.

Uganda is represented by a high-powered delegation led by Rev. Can. Dr. Duncans Mugumya, Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports, Ministry of Education and Sports, FEASSA and USSSA President Justus Mugisha, USSSA CEO Chris Mugisha Banage, Hajji Twahil Kiteezaala USSSA 1st vice president, USSSA Head of Capacity Building Patrick Alfred Okanya, officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, and members of the USSSA Executive Committee.



The symposium also welcomed two distinguished international guests. Hasnae Iddriss, Executive Director of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), who delivered a keynote address on the ISF’s values, goals, and achievements. She thanked member countries for their active participation in ISF Games and highlighted the upcoming 2026 calendar, noting that only the Futsal World Cup remains this year slated for November in Brazil.
In addition, Stelios Daskalakis, General Secretary of the European School Sport Federation, shared insights into the European model of resource generation and school sports competitions, offering valuable lessons for African member countries.

The symposium continues tomorrow, with more discussions expected on Funding Management and Sustainability of school sports.
Day 2 of the symposium will also be attended by the International School Sport Federation President Zeljko Tanaskovic who will be the key note speaker and President African School Sport Federation, Youssef Belqasmi.
Meanwhile the FEASSA Games continue to dominate while coming closer to the tail end in Kakamega.
