St. Noa battle Kawempe in title defence
Sumaiya Nalumu’s lone goal was enough to guide St. Noa Girls School Zana to a 1-0 win over Amus College in Tuesday’s semifinals of girls’ football at the ongoing Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association (Feasssa) Games at Kakamega High School.
The match was a feisty affair but was largely also been devoid of creativity until Nalumu went on that mazy run in the 65th minute and was fouled at close to the box.
She guided the ball with pace and power just over the Amus wall but the goalkeeper was slow to react and punched it into her own net. Five minutes to play seemed to little for Amus to conjure up a response.
St. Noa now have a chance to defend their title but they must shut down Kawempe Muslim danger girl Agnes Nabukenya.
It is not a farfetched task as the sides drew 0-0 in the group stages.
Nabukenya scored four against Archbishop Njenga to guide Kawempe to a 4-2 win.
Archbishop Njenga scored first in the 10th minute moments after Nabukenya had had an attempt cancelled for offside.
In the 20th minute, Nabukenya equalized burying her chance at the near post from a narrow angle to ensure the first half ended 1-1.
Kawempe was the better side at the start of the second half but could not capitalize on their chances. In the 54th minute, Archbishop Njenga restored their lead against the run of play.
But Nabukenya’s reaction was to hit the ball with power to restart play. It hit the crossbar and gave her morale to do the same when Kawempe won a freekick in the centre circle two minutes later.
This time she scored to equalize. At the hour mark, Nabukenya was played in by Dorcus Kisakye and she slotted home her third. Archbishop Njenga’s coach changed keepers but even the replacement faced Nabukenya’s wrath when she won another freekick from a similar distance near the centreline. The ball sailed almost half of the distance of the pitch before hitting the back of the net for Nabukenya’s 9th goal of the tournament.
