Kakungulu Memorial School hockey girls and boys were imperious in their meetings with City High School in the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) qualifiers for Kampala district held yesterday at Lugogo Astro-turf Grounds.
The qualifiers played in good sunny weather attracted these two schools with Old Kampala SS and Kololo SS among notable absentees from the sides that have taken part in past qualifiers.
First the Kakungulu girls led early in the fourth minute through captain Jolly Alimo’s goal. Then doubled the lead through striker Brenda Achayo at the end of the first quarter.
City High fought back and pulled one back in the 29th minute through captain Janet Nakato only for Irene Nyapendi to go the other end and make it 3-1 at the stroke of halftime.
In the second half, Achayo and Alimo doubled their money in the 42nd and 43rd minute then Winnie Atim made it 6-1 at the start of the fourth quarter.
“I feel very happy that we are winning more games and returning to school with trophies,” Alimo said.
“I urge my teammates to continue training and improving their talents. Hopefully, other teams can work harder too because the sport is about togetherness,” Alimo added.
Floodgates
For the boys, it was one way traffic as Kakungulu won 9-0.
City High looked like it would hold but James Larombi opened the scoring in the 10th minute.
Then the floodgates opened in the second quarter where Larombi scored in the 17th and 29th minutes to complete a hattrick.
In between his goals were penalty corner conversations from Brian Ofoyimungu and Nicholas Lukwago in the 18th and 20th minutes respectively.
In the second half, Kakungulu scored twice in each quarter to complete the 9-0 rout. Hamis Gulume and Shafic Byamukama scored in the 32nd and 45th minutes while Larombi scored his fourth in the 58th minute shortly before Shafic Abdul converted another penalty corner at the death.
“We had a good game but even then you cannot say we did not make individual mistakes as players. We need to style up and take every game seriously,” Larombi said.
City High skipper Sula Bwabye was frustrated that they “did not pile more pressure by sending more balls upfront” but still remained happy about their efforts and called on his colleagues “to train harder so that the next games are better.”
