Buganda Schools Cup Launched: A Journey Towards Sports Brilliance and Youth Empowerment

On the 15th of June 2023, a momentous event took place as the Buganda Schools Cup was officially launched, marking the beginning of another chapter in school sports in the region. The ceremony, held at Bulange, witnessed the presence of notable guests, officials, and sports enthusiasts who gathered to witness the inauguration of a tournament aimed at promoting integrity, football development, and healthy competition among schools.

The proceedings commenced with a captivating presentation delivered by the first vice president of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and president of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Justus Mugisha. His address centered on the crucial need to enhance the integrity of school tournaments by ensuring that players participating in these competitions are of the appropriate age and genuine students of their respective schools. This emphasis on fair play and authenticity will undoubtedly contribute to the overall development of football in Uganda.

“I am deeply honored to launch the Buganda Schools Cup today, with a strong focus on enhancing the tournament’s integrity. It is crucial that players are of the right age and genuine students, as this will contribute to the overall development of football in our nation,” stated the first vice president of FUFA and president of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association.

As the first vice president of FUFA and president of USSSA, he expressed his unwavering commitment, along with the support of both organizations, to ensure the successful execution of the Buganda Schools Cup. This collaboration between Buganda, FUFA and USSSA is of paramount importance in realizing the shared vision for the tournament and its impact on football development.

Recognizing the significance of collective strength, Mugisha emphasized the need to strengthen all aspects of the tournament, leaving no room for weak points. By prioritizing professionalism, fairness, and integrity in areas such as player registration and match officiating, the Buganda Schools Cup aims to set a high standard for school sports in the region.

“Buganda, FUFA and USSSA are committed to working together to ensure a tournament free from weak points, as a strong chain requires strengthening every aspect,” Mugisha added.

The Buganda Schools Cup not only serves as a platform for showcasing the exceptional sports talent of young players but also as a catalyst for character development, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Through this tournament, participants will have the opportunity to display their skills, compete at a high level, and kindle their passion for the beautiful game.

“We are excited to launch the Kabaka Cup, Buganda Cup, and Nabagereka Cup, catering to primary and secondary schools, as well as girls’ primary schools,” shared Hajji Sekabira Abdul Lukooya, head of sports in Buganda schools. “It is an honor to have the presence of FUFA’s 1st vice president and Hon. Minister Henry Sekabembe to inaugurate this year’s edition,” he added.

“With the participation of numerous schools expected, we have already secured all the trophies. The winning school will also be rewarded with a bull. We are confident that this year’s edition will be bigger and better, and we urge schools to join us,” said Hajji Sekabira. “Next week, schools will begin competing in various games such as woodball, basketball, volleyball, handball, and football for both boys and girls. The draws will determine which schools will kick off the tournament,” he concluded.
