ISF GYMNASIADE BAHRAIN 2024: Team Uganda concludes on a high.

Overview

The 11th edition of the biggest ISF event the Gymnasiade officially came to a close on 30th October 2024 at Khalifah stadium, Khalifah sports city where over 5000 paricipants from 70 countries from all over the world gatherered. The Gymnasiade saw athletes compete in a record 26 sports discplines of which Uganda took part in 6 that is swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, basketball 3X3 and tennis.

From quite a slow start to finishing on a high note is a summary of Uganda’s presence in Manama city of Bahrain.

Medals

  • Silver – 2 (athletics)
  • bronze – 1 ( tennis)

Uganda managed to scoop 3 medals at the ISF Gymnasiade with 2 silver from athletics and one bronze from tennis.

Brendah Chekwemoi started the medal charge at the competitions as she grabbed Uganda silver in the 800M race at Bahrain International stadium. Brendah ran a time of 2:11:69 which was bettered by Loullianna Rousunu from Greece with 2:11:66.

A quartet of Brenda Chekwemoi, Fellister Chekwemoi, Mary Awat and Peace Mbabazi added to the tally yet another silver as they came second in the long medley relay heat 1 final. The quartet posted a time of 5:12:81 behind P.R China counterparts who posted 5:8:86.

Uganda’s final shot at the medals came in the tennis boys’ doubles at Bahrain tennis courts where Kibuli SS duo Zziwa Adrian Troy and Kato Said Musa beat India 4-1, 4-1 to clinch bronze.

The ISF Gymnasiade attracted over 5000 participants from 70 countries, 19 of which were from Africa.

Uganda with 3 medals ranked 34 worldwide and 5th in Africa. In Africa Uganda came 5th behind Morocco which had a total of 41, Algeria 48, Nigeria 2and Benin with a single gold medal.

Considering the fact that 17 countries went home with no medal, this was a hugely a great performance by team Uganda wasn’t it?

The event that started on 23rd October came to an official close at Khalifah stadium on 30th October 2024.

Team Uganda will return home on 1st November 2024 at 10:15am via FlyDubai.
