James Larombi left it late but will hardly care about the timing as his solitary goal earned Kakungulu Memorial yet another triumph in the boys’ hockey competition at the Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games in Huye, Rwanda on Saturday.

Larombi’s goal came in the 54th minute of a pulsating final played in the Huye afternoon heat.

It was a tense final with Musingu bent on ensuring the trophy that eluded Kenyan teams last year returns home after a year’s spell in Kampala.

However, Kakungulu showed good game management to ensure they were not broken in their tough periods.

Kenya, however, took consolation in having two teams on the podium as St. Anthony beat Ugandan side St. Mary’s College Kisubi 2-0 in the third place playoff.

Unfortunately for Kakungulu, it was not a clean sweep as their girls’ team lost a decisive encounter to Kenyan champions Nyamira 2-0.

Kakungulu came into this final game in a tight spot as they had to beat Nyamira by at least eight goals to have a chance of defending their trophy.

But the Ugandan side could not breach the Kenyans’ defence and ended up letting in two goals to finish the competition with 10 points – six behind the new regional champions Nyamira.

Nyamira, like St. Joseph Kitale, did not concede a goal in the tournament but scored 21 to get ahead of their Kenyan counterparts on goal difference.

Things kept getting worse for Kakungulu as Tigoi kept pumping goals against Gayaza High School in the other match played in the mid-morning sun. Tigoi won 13-0 to also get to 10 points and ensure they pushed Kakungulu completely out of the medal bracket.
