For school sports for better

Masheruka Girls make Hockey nationals less than five months after introducing sport.

Masheruka Girls have made their hockey debut at the Nationals. The School introduced the sport in February 2025. Ampeire Daisy Nyangoma, the Vice Captain is also happy to try a new sport, she is an athlete and took part in the Ball Games II at Teso College Aloet in Soroti, 2024.

Masheruka Girls lost their first game 1-0 to Western opponents Sacred Heart Mushanga. However their teacher Kirabo Imelda was happy that the girls didn’t concede many goals to the regular participants Mushanga.
“There are several sports we would like to introduce for example basketball but we also have netball handball, volleyball, football also happening” Concluded Teacher Kirabo Imelda.

The Captain Ainemababzi Gift says the game was good and insists they tried their best but expect to do better going-forward. “We have only started playing hockey this year (2025) but in just 4 months we are at the nationals”

Journalist and Hockey Coach Muziransa Makhtum says the basics of hockey are easy to learn and very straightforward but the competitive games are what sets players apart.

Masheruka girls are coached by Opoya Elvis a seasoned hockey player who won several MVP accolades both at National and FEASSA level while he studied at Kakungulu Memorial School.
Opoya works under a project named Hockey for skills foundation whose main aim is to develop the sport across the country. He was previously coaching Sacred Heart Mushanga who then suggested that the sport be introduced to fellow Western competitors Masheruka. Masheruka administration gladly welcomed initiative and training started straight away.
“Training the girls has been challenging due to limited time because they also have to study, I am happy they have given all their best. The strike line was a bit dormant but I know they will improve as they play more games”. Coach Opoya

Masheruka also has a team taking part in Volleyball U16 at the same Ball Games 1.
Masheruka is a girls’ only boarding school located in Sheema District along Kabwohe road.
