National Boys Football Championship: Team Profile – Fort Portal SS

City: Fort Portal

Zone: Rwenzori Zone

The school was founded in 1993 and is located in the heart of Fort Portal Tourism City.

To qualify for nationals, Fort Portal SS beat St. Leo’s College Kyegobe 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the semifinals, and then beat Garama SS 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in the final.

Penalties have turned out to be their strength, having qualified through penalties from the district level at the quarterfinals to finals and at the zone level from quarterfinals to finals.

The team has proved to be zonal giants, having won the zonal games three consecutive times. The team has featured at the national level since 2018 to date, and with a well-built project, the Western Uganda side hopes for better results.

At this year’s national games in Ngora, the team will be led by Bobban Tamale, Nabiyu Polly, and Nyamutale Joseph Sadam as head coach, assistant coach, and goalkeeping coach, respectively.

Uganda Cubs’ winger Derrick Ssozi will be a player to look out for, though captain Ssentongo Wycliffe and Ronald Ayesiga are other talents Fort Portal SS will rely on.

The team was drawn in Group M alongside Kitgum Comprehensive, Masaka’s giants Masaka SS, and Luwero’s finest Standard High School Ndejje Campus.

To test their preparedness, they will face Masaka SS in their opening fixture to be played on Tuesday afternoon.
