Preparatory Meeting Held Ahead of Inaugural ANOCA Africa School Games in Algeria

A key preparatory meeting has been held in advance of the inaugural Africa National Olympic Committee Association (ANOCA) School Games, set to take place in Algeria from July 26 to August 5, 2025.

The meeting brought together games teachers from schools that emerged among the top three in each discipline during the recently concluded Ball Games I, held in Bukedea earlier this May. The selected disciplines include athletics, basketball, cycling, tennis, breaking, table tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, badminton, swimming, handball, and beach volleyball.

Chaired by Mr. Mugisha Justus, President of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA), the meeting also featured remarks from Ms. Dhamuzungu Lydia, Assistant General Secretary of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) and designated Leader of Delegation for Team Uganda.

“This meeting is an opportunity to exchange ideas and prepare for Uganda’s participation in the first-ever Africa School Games, following a memorandum of understanding signed between USSSA and the Uganda Olympic Committee,” stated Mr. Mugisha.

Mr. Mugisha further clarified logistical responsibilities, saying:
“Participating schools will be responsible for processing passports and purchasing air tickets. Meanwhile, USSSA, in partnership with the Uganda Olympic Committee and the National Council of Sports, will provide team kits in national colours, as well as cover visas, insurance, accommodation, and meals.”

Ms. Dhamuzungu commended USSSA for preparing athletes to reach this historic stage:
“We applaud USSSA for grooming young talent and opening doors to international competition. Registration remains open until June 5, 2025, and we encourage early submissions to ensure a smooth and efficient planning process.” She also added that “teachers with French or Arabic language skills would be of added advantage to the delegation.”

The inaugural Africa School Games will be held across four Algerian cities—Annaba, Sétif, Constantine, and Skikda. The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 26, with the closing ceremony on August 5, followed by cultural activities on August 7.
