Revised Athletics Competition Format and Scoring System Announced

Kampala, 17th June 2023 – The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has released a revised format and scoring system for the upcoming athletics competition, addressing the feedback and concerns raised by participants. The new format aims to ensure a fair and competitive environment while maintaining the spirit of healthy competition.

The competition is part of the upcoming USSSA Ball Games II scheduled to run from 9th – 18th July 2023. Hosted by St Mary’s College Rushoroza in Kabale, will see selected students represent their respective schools, districts, and zones. With the introduction of a scoring system for schools, districts, and zones, individual athletes will now contribute points based on their performances in their respective disciplines.

In the revised scoring system:

  • Individual Disciplines: Athletes competing in individual disciplines will score points for their schools, districts, and zones, rewarding their individual achievements.
  • Relays: Relay events will only contribute points to the district and zone levels, as they involve athletes from multiple schools.

To summarize the scoring distribution:

  • Schools: Points earned by individual athletes will contribute to their respective schools’ scores.
  • Districts: Points will be earned from both individual athlete performances and relay events within the district.
  • Zones: Points will be earned collectively from all the districts that make up the zone, including individual and relay events.

The competition will feature several trophies to recognize outstanding performances:

  • Best School (Girls and Boys)
  • Best District (Girls and Boys)
  • Best Zone (Girls and Boys)
  • Overall District Champion

It is important to note that only athletes who constitute the district team will compete for their schools. The maximum number of athletes per district will be limited to 25 girls and 25 boys.

This new scoring system aims to strike a balance between recognizing individual performances and fostering a sense of unity among athletes representing their schools, districts, and zones. By allocating points to each level, the competition promotes healthy rivalries, encourages teamwork, and motivates athletes to strive for excellence in both individual and collective endeavors.

As the anticipation for the USSSA Ball Games II 2023 athletics competition builds, athletes, coaches, and spectators eagerly await the showcase of talent, dedication, and teamwork that will be on display at the district, zonal, and eventually the national level. The new scoring system is poised to provide an exhilarating and inclusive experience for all participants, culminating in a celebration of athletic prowess across all levels of competition.

The USSSA encourages all students to actively participate in the athletics competition, showcasing their talent and contributing to the success of their schools, districts, and zones. Dedication and sportsmanship will play a vital role in achieving excellent results.
