St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School Kitende was crowned as champions for the 2023 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) boys’ football championship in Fort Portal, Kabarole district.
The Wakiso giants overcame Masaka based St Henry’s Kitovu 1-0 at Nyakasura school playground on Saturday, 20th May 2023.
Habib Oloya connected home captain Justine Opiro’s long throw-in for the lone goal before a capacity crowd.
For the rest of the time, St Mary’s S.S Kitende defended wholesomely in numbers to thwart the attacks from St Henry’s Kitovu forwards Godfrey Ssekibengo and Denish Dramuke.
This was St Mary’s SS Kitende 12th national football title that their head coach Daniel Male attributed to early preparations, good team work and the overwhelming character from the school management.
“We commenced preparations quite early from the last time we won in Arua (2022). The players gave their best in unison and were committed. Also, the will power to support the team from the school management led by Dr Lawrence Mulindwa drove us further” Male who is deputized by Joackim Mukungu stated.
Fred Kasekende, the head coach at St Henry’s College Kitovu congragulated the winners, attributing the loss to inexperience.
“I want to appreciate the champions. We achieved to play in the final, our first ever and qualify for FEASSSA. We were abit naïve but one day, we shall lift the trophy” Kasekende remarked.
The closing ceremony was graced by a number of dignitaries to include the Commissioner Physical Education and sports Rev Canon Duncans Mugumya, the host head teacher Rev. Richardson Balinda, RCC Kabarole district, Association of Secondary Schools Head teachers Union (ASSHU) president Father Augustine Mugabo, USSSA president Justus Mugisha and the executive committee members and other staff, Kachumbali MP Hon. Patrick Isigai as well as other local area leaders.
Meanwhile, the third place play-off match between Amus College School and Royal Giant High School was won by the latter, 4-2.
That said, Royal High School Mityana from Mpigi zone scooped bronze and a slot to the 2023 FEASSSA Games in Huye city, Rwanda.
Individual top performers:
The most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament was Allan Oyirwoth from Amus College School.
The top scorer was Abdulnoor Nsereko (St Mary’s S.S Kitende) with 11 goals.
Royal Giant High School’s Shamulan Kamya was best goalkeeper.
A total of 64 schools took part in this year’s competition played upon an U-20 basis.
