The battle for the 6 slots to represent Ankole zone at this year’s Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) national girls football got underway this evening, as the Ankole zone girls football kicked off at Bushenyi Core PTC grounds in Bushenyi town.
Over 64 teams that qualified from the 13 districts of the zone started converging at the hosting venue ahead of the competition that was expected to kick off later in the evening.
The athletes would be taken through the mandatory screening exercise before being cleared to take part, and this year saw strict regulations on the athletes, which required corresponding records of the athlete’s Education Management Information System (EMIS) and USSSA registration.
“We have decided to use this system with the computers and enough association staff so that we get rid of ineligibility before we start the games. We realized that we get many petitions during games because we don’t do this kind of screening, but this time, we decided to do it,” Said zonal chairman Egidio Mucunguzi.
USSSA has deployed Geoffrey Langa to oversee the activities and the flow of the championship, and according to him, the start is encouraging.

“I am impressed by the way the zone has mobilized for massive participation because all qualified teams have turned up and the athletes look of the required age. USSSA is doing everything to deal with ineligibility, and I am happy Ankole zone is rightly doing this,” Langa noted.
Boni Cosnilii are the defending champions of the competition that climaxes on Sunday, and will be the team to beat as the battle for qualification to the national championship rages.
