July 2, 2023

The Uganda Dance Sport Federation (UDSF) is leaving no stone unturned as it prepares for the highly anticipated USSSA Ball Games II National Championships 2023 Kabale, set to take place from July 9th to July 18th. This prestigious event, hosted by St. Mary’s College Rushoroza, promises to be a thrilling display of talent and skill across multiple sports disciplines.

A win worth celebrating

Dance sport, as one of the youngest sports in Uganda, has been gaining momentum and popularity, thanks to the concerted efforts of UDSF in collaboration with USSSA zonal leaders and the technical team. The inclusion of dance sport in the USSSA Ball Games II National Championships is a significant milestone, highlighting its growth and recognition within the sporting community.

To ensure equal opportunities and representation, the USSSA has allocated 12 slots for both boys and girls in the dance sport category. These slots have been distributed among schools from various regions across Uganda, providing a platform for talented dancers to showcase their abilities. The selection process involved staging qualifiers in 12 zones, where participants competed for a chance to represent their respective regions.

“We have worked closely with USSSA zonal leaders and the technical team to organize the dance sport qualifiers. Our aim is to give talented dancers from all over Uganda an opportunity to participate and shine on a national stage. By including dance sport in the USSSA Ball Games, we are promoting its growth and encouraging more students to embrace this beautiful art form,” stated Barnabas Sebuyungo, General Secretary of UDSF.

In order to establish a solid foundation for dance sport in secondary schools, UDSF has implemented various initiatives. The federation has launched dance sport clubs in every region, ensuring that students have access to training, mentorship, and regular competitions. This approach not only nurtures talent but also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among young dancers.

UDSF has also prioritized the training and development of technical personnel to ensure the smooth conduct of dance sport competitions. Qualified judges, proficient DJs, and competent MCs have been appointed to officiate and enhance the overall experience. The federation has conducted extensive training programs, equipping three students per school with the necessary skills to serve as DJs, MCs, and judges in their respective regions.

The dance sport qualifiers have been held across the country, with several regions already completing their competitions. The remaining zones, including the upcoming Rwenzori zone hosted by Nayaksura School on Wednesday, July 28th, are eagerly preparing to showcase their top-performing dancers. These qualifiers not only determine the finalists but also serve as a platform for talent identification and development.

Beyond the excitement and competition of the USSSA Ball Games II National Championships 2023 Kabale, UDSF sees this event as a significant stepping stone towards Olympic qualification. The federation has formed a national team consisting of 32 exceptional dancers, 12 of whom are current secondary school students. These talented individuals, identified through a rigorous national ranking system, have demonstrated immense potential and are poised to represent Uganda on the global stage.

Among the rising stars is a remarkable 15-year-old girl Kawala Sophia who recently transferred from Kazo Secondary School to Saint Julian. She stands on the cusp of Olympic qualification, with just three points separating her from securing a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her dedication, talent, and relentless pursuit of excellence serve as an inspiration to aspiring dancers across the country.

The USSSA Ball Games II National Championships 2023 Kabale not only provide a platform for athletes to showcase their

skills but also create an avenue for new talent to emerge. UDSF envisions a future where dance sport becomes a staple in Ugandan schools, nurturing and empowering the next generation of dancers.

As the countdown to the championships continues, anticipation and excitement are building. The USSSA Ball Games II National Championships 2023 Kabale will undoubtedly be a celebration of athleticism, artistry, and the unifying power of sports.
