From Bududa to Pallisa: Nelima Miriam Buyela’s journey to inspire Bududa through sport.

By Jude Atwiine

When the sun rises over the misty hills of Bududa, most people are just beginning their day. For Nelima Miriam Buyela, a teacher at Hawthrone Scribner High School in Bududa, the day begins long before dawn with a determined journey to Pallisa, driven by a passion to transform school sports in her community.

Nelima is one of the participants in the USSSA Capacity Building Training taking place in Pallisa from 9th to 13th February, a program bringing together teachers, students, and sports enthusiasts from Pallisa and neighboring districts including Kumi, Kibuku, Butaleja, and Tirinyi.

Inspired by testimonies from friends who had attended Capacity Building courses and online information, Nelima mobilized a team of six; five students and one fellow teacher to join her for what she considered an unmissable opportunity.

“We heard of the USSSA Capacity Building training online and from other friends who had done the courses and attained skills from it. We decided to travel all the way from Bududa to Pallisa to acquire these skills,” she said.

For Nelima, the training is more than personal development, it is a mission to uplift her school and the entire Bugishu region.

“We came two sports teachers and five students. When we reached here, it was nice and interesting, and we got the skills. We shall do our best not only in umpiring but also in coaching,” she added.

Inspiring a region through Sport.

Beyond acquiring skills, Nelima has a bigger vision; to inspire schools, teams, and individuals across the Bugishu region to embrace training and capacity building.

“We are also going to inspire other teams, schools, and individuals in Bugishu region to come and attend the trainings,” she said.

Her story mirrors the broader USSSA Capacity building vision of empowering teachers and students, ensuring that quality sports education reaches even the most remote communities.
