The 2026 USSSA Boys National Football Championship officially got underway in Lira with thrilling encounters, dominant performances, and early statements from title contenders on Match Day One.
A total of eighty four goals were scored on match day one with Atendere Bob scoring one of the beautiful goals of the day. Bob lit up the contest with a stunning volley as Bukedea Comprehensive School South cruised to a 4-1 victory over PP Newton SS. The forward reacted quickest to a teasing delivery into the box, connecting sweetly with the ball in mid-air before firing an unstoppable effort beyond the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The spectacular strike sparked wild celebrations among the Bukedea players and fans, capping off a dominant second-half performance after the two sides had gone into the break level at 0-0.
Defending champions Buddo SS began their title defense on a strong note with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Teso College Aloet in one of the mid-morning fixtures. The Wakiso giants looked composed and determined as they opened their campaign with maximum points.Hosts Lira Town College, however, endured a disappointing start on home soil after falling 3-1 to a clinical Numasa SS side. Despite home support, Lira struggled to contain Numasa’s attacking threat throughout the game.

One of the standout performances of the day came from Bukedea Comprehensive School South, who produced a dominant second-half display to defeat PP Newton SS 4-1. After a goalless first half, Bukedea South returned from the break energized and ruthless in attack.
Tournament heavyweights St. Mary’s Kitende were held to a 1-1 draw by Bukedea Comprehensive School North in a tightly contested encounter, while Mukono Kings High edged Standard High School Ndejje 1-0 to secure an important opening victory.
Elsewhere, Agape SS registered one of the biggest wins of the day after thrashing Makobore High School 6-1, while Masindi SS also impressed with a commanding 6-2 victory over Kaserem SS.

Greenlight Islamic School added to the high-scoring action by defeating Doctor Obote College 5-1.Aiden College Wakiso produced another emphatic display with a 5-0 demolition of Garama SS, as Mentor SS comfortably swept aside Nkoma SS 4-0.Several matches were closely contested and ended in draws.
Madina Islamic and Kitgum Standard High played out a goalless stalemate, while Jinja Progressive Academy shared spoils with Kalisizo Seed SS in a 1-1 draw. London College Nansana and Kawempe Muslim SS also settled for a barren draw.

Meanwhile, the Uganda Secondary School Sports Association has also confirmed that the official opening ceremony, initially scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, was postponed to Wednesday, May 13, in respect of the Presidential swearing-in ceremony taking place on the same date.
