By: John Wycliffe Musinguzi

Mukono District has officially launched the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Weekend League, with the inaugural matches played on Sunday, 18 October 2026, at Kasawo Islamic Secondary School in Mukono District. The opening day attracted several schools competing in boys’ football, girls’ football and netball.

Present at the launch were Muhumuza Richard, Zone Chairman, Serugo Wilberforce, Zone General Secretary, Kitooke Steven, Mukono District Chairman, Kalungi Mubarak, Mukono District General Secretary and Hajj Kajaaya Kassim, Director of Kasawo Islamic Secondary School, the host institution.

The league is part of USSSA’s initiative to provide students with more opportunities to participate in sports outside the normal school sports calendar while promoting talent development and continuous competition.

Beyond competition, the Weekend League will provide a platform for USSSA capacity-building beneficiaries to officiate matches, gain practical experience and prepare for bigger responsibilities ahead of the 2027 school sports calendar.

Mubarak Kalungi, the Mukono District General Secretary, appreciated the schools that participated in the inaugural edition and called upon more schools to join the league. He emphasised the importance of giving students more opportunities to engage in sports outside the classroom.

Results and standings

In the boys’ football competition, Latifah Mixed Secondary School opened their campaign with a 2–0 victory over Romasa College, while Seroma Church of Uganda High School defeated Central College Kabimbiri 1-0. Kasawo Islamic Secondary School also registered a 1-0 win against Dynamic Secondary School A.

Dynamic Secondary School B and Kasana Vocational School shared the points after a goalless draw. Following the opening matches, Latifah Mixed Secondary School led the standings on goal difference, ahead of Kasawo Islamic Secondary School and Seroma CHS, who also collected three points each.

In girls’ football, Latifah Mixed S.S. B started strongly with a 1-0 victory over Seroma CHS to take the early lead in the standings. Latifah Mixed S.S. A, Hopeful Future S.S. and Lugazi Homestone had not played their opening fixtures by the end of Day One.

Netball also produced competitive action, with Seroma CHS defeating Kasana Vocational School 21-18 before Kasana VOC suffered a second defeat, losing 27-18 to Dynamic S.S. A. Dynamic S.S. A consequently topped the netball standings with two points and a goal difference of 9, level on points with Seroma CHS, who occupied second place.

Expanding school sports participation

The USSSA Weekend League is being rolled out across districts in Uganda, with the long-term objective of extending the programme throughout the country by 2027. Through regular weekend competitions, the association aims to provide athletes with more playing time, strengthen grassroots sports development and create opportunities for emerging officials to gain experience.

The launch in Mukono marks another step towards strengthening school sports beyond the traditional competition calendar, with participating schools expected to benefit from continued competition, talent identification and improved preparation for future school sports events.
