Rines Shock Kawempe as Semi-Finalists Book FEASSA Slots
The race for regional supremacy took a dramatic turn as the final four of the USSSA Girls Football Ball Games I were confirmed, with record champions Kawempe Muslim SS suffering a heartbreaking exit at the hands of Wakiso zone giants Rines SS.
Rines SS held their nerve in a tense quarterfinal clash, eliminating Kawempe Muslim 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a goalless stalemate in normal time. In what was arguably the most tactical encounter of the day, both sides cancelled each other out before Rines showed composure from the spot to seal a famous victory and deny Kawempe a place at the FEASSA Games.
Defending champions St Noa Girls SS underlined their title credentials with a commanding 3-0 win over Mukono’s last representatives, Latifah Mixed SS Kabimbiri.
Latifah showed resilience in the opening half, but a clinical second-half display from St Noa saw them score three unanswered goals to comfortably progress.
Boni Consillii Girls continued their impressive run, reaching the semifinals for a second consecutive year after edging Busoga champions Jinja Progressive Academy in a dramatic penalty shootout. The match had ended 1-1 in normal time, with Jinja drawing first blood through one of the fastest goals of the tournament, scored inside the opening minute by Yagala Flavia.
However, Ariho Rinah restored parity for Boni Consillii from the penalty spot in the second half before they triumphed 5-4 in the shootout.
In the all-Teso derby, Amus College narrowly defeated Bukedea Comprehensive School 1-0 to secure their place among the last four. Faith Akoi’s decisive strike in the 49th minute proved enough to separate the two sides in a tightly contested affair.
The four semifinalists — Rines SS, Amus College, St Noa Girls SS, and Boni Consillii Girls — have all secured qualification to represent Uganda at the FEASSA Games set to take place in Morogoro, Tanzania this August.
