KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA), in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) and the Association of Secondary School Headteachers of Uganda (ASSHU), has officially launched the bidding process for schools interested in hosting the country’s flagship secondary school sports championships in 2027.
The call presents an exciting opportunity for schools, districts, and communities to position themselves at the center of Uganda’s thriving school sports movement by hosting thousands of student-athletes, coaches, officials, and sports enthusiasts from across the nation.
Applications are now open for schools wishing to host or co-host any of the following national events:
Elite Secondary School Games
National Secondary School Ball Games I
National Football Boys Championship
National Secondary School Swimming Gala
National Ball Games II, Mind Games and Athletics Championship
A Platform for Excellence
The championships represent the pinnacle of secondary school sport in Uganda, serving as the country’s largest talent identification and development platform.
The 2027 competitions will bring together athletes competing in over 30 sporting disciplines ranging from football, basketball, volleyball, rugby, netball and athletics to swimming, cricket, badminton, golf, chess, dancesport, futsal, beach sports and several emerging disciplines.
With participation numbers expected to run into thousands, successful hosts will play a critical role in delivering memorable experiences for student-athletes while showcasing their schools, districts and regions on the national stage.
CEO Calls for Competitive Bids
Speaking on the announcement, USSSA Chief Executive Officer Christopher Mugisha Banage encouraged schools with the capacity and vision to submit competitive bids.
“Hosting a USSSA National Championship is more than organizing a sports event. It is an opportunity to inspire young people, promote sports development, showcase your institution and community, and contribute to the growth of school sports in Uganda. We encourage schools with the required facilities and commitment to come forward and be part of this journey.”

He noted that the championships continue to grow in stature and participation every year, making them some of the most significant youth sporting events on the national calendar.
What It Takes to Host
To ensure the highest standards of athlete welfare and event delivery, USSSA has outlined comprehensive hosting requirements covering accommodation, feeding, security, medical services, competition venues, accreditation facilities, ceremonies and overall event management.
Host schools will be required to provide safe and adequate accommodation, separate facilities for boys and girls, reliable water and power supply, standard playing venues, medical support systems, secure environments and suitable spaces for accreditation, meetings and media operations.
The bidding framework also requires the involvement of both a main host and co-host school to facilitate accommodation and efficient event operations.
Local Government Support Key
USSSA has further encouraged schools to work closely with local authorities throughout the bidding process. Endorsements and support from Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), District Education Officers (DEOs), District Sports Officers (DSOs) and other stakeholders will strengthen applications and demonstrate local readiness to host national events.
Opportunity to Showcase Communities
Beyond sports, hosting a national championship provides an opportunity for schools and communities to showcase their infrastructure, hospitality, culture and tourism potential to visitors from across Uganda.
Over the years, host institutions have benefited from improved sports facilities, increased visibility, stronger community partnerships and enhanced reputations as centres of sporting excellence.
Call for Applications
USSSA is urging all interested schools to carefully review the bidding requirements, complete the prescribed application forms and submit their bids before the deadline.
Applications must be delivered to the USSSA Secretariat or sent electronically by 25 September 2026 at 5:00 PM.
