USSSA Weekend League Committee Holds Inaugural Meeting to Chart Programme’s Future

KAMPALA — The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Weekend League Committee held its inaugural meeting to map out strategies to strengthen the implementation, coordination, and long-term sustainability of the Weekend League programme.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at the USSSA Head Office at GNS Plaza, Old Kampala, brought together committee members and programme officials to discuss practical approaches to expanding school participation and providing learners with regular competitive opportunities.

The discussions focused on strengthening programme coordination, engaging schools and local leaders, addressing implementation challenges and establishing a sustainable framework for regular school sports competitions.

Committee Members Meet to Strengthen Implementation

The meeting was attended by Weekend League Committee Chairperson Langa Geoffery, committee members Hajji Twahil Kiteezaala and Richard Muhumuza, USSSA staff member Nsimbi Martin, and Weekend League Programme Manager Kintu Ivan Bayige.

The inaugural meeting marked the beginning of the committee’s work to provide direction and support for the effective implementation and growth of the programme.

Chairperson Langa emphasised the importance of collective responsibility, teamwork and practical planning in ensuring that the Weekend League delivers meaningful competition opportunities for schools and learners.

“The success of the Weekend League will depend on our commitment, teamwork and ability to develop practical approaches that work for schools. We need to work together to ensure the programme delivers regular and meaningful competition for learners,” Langa said.

Creating More Opportunities for Learners

The Weekend League is a USSSA initiative designed to provide learners with consistent match experience beyond major championship events. Through regular competition, the programme seeks to support talent identification and development while creating pathways for learners to progress to higher levels of school sport.

Speaking about the programme’s potential, Weekend League Programme Manager Kintu Ivan Bayige highlighted its importance in translating the association’s vision into practical opportunities for young athletes.

“The Weekend League is an important platform for turning the USSSA vision into action. Our focus is to create more opportunities for learners to compete regularly, develop their talents and progress to higher levels of school sport. Through proper coordination and stakeholder support, we can build a sustainable programme that benefits schools across the country,” Bayige said.

The programme is expected to strengthen the connection between grassroots school sport and higher levels of competition by giving learners more opportunities to demonstrate their abilities, improve their performance and gain valuable competitive experience.

Collaboration Key to Sustainable Growth

The committee identified coordination, school engagement and the resolution of implementation challenges as important areas of focus in advancing the Weekend League.

Effective collaboration among USSSA leadership, zonal and district structures, participating schools and other stakeholders will be essential to ensuring that the programme operates consistently and reaches more learners.

The committee’s work will contribute to efforts to establish accessible and sustainable competitions within the school sports calendar, complementing USSSA’s existing championship structures and talent development initiatives.

As the programme develops, sustained stakeholder engagement and effective organisation will be critical to ensuring that more schools can participate and learners benefit from regular sporting opportunities.

Advancing the USSSA Talent Development Agenda

The establishment of the Weekend League Committee reflects USSSA’s continued efforts to strengthen school sport and create more opportunities for learners to discover, nurture and develop their sporting abilities.

Through the Weekend League, the association aims to reinforce its talent development pathway, supporting learners from grassroots participation towards higher levels of competition.

The initiative aligns with USSSA’s mission to identify, nurture, develop and promote talent, as the association works towards its vision of becoming the leading School Sports Association in Africa.
