Smack, Jinja in rugby finals
Jinja SS hope to win their first ever Uganda Secondary School Sports Association Ball Games I rugby 15s title on Thursday at Namilyango College.
But standing in their way is an equally spirited St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK).
Both finalists stunned their opponents in the semifinals with results that many in the rugby world are still coming to terms with.
Jinja beat King’s College Budo, who have won the last three USSSA titles, 26-10.
Budo took an early 3-0 lead but Jinja recovered to lead 11-3 at halftime following two penalties and a try at the stroke of halftime.
Another 15 points put the game beyond Budo who only managed a converted try at the death.
SMACK left a partisan crowd at Namilyango College in shock with a 13-11 win.
SMACK had an early penalty but Namilyango levelled. SMACK scored another but Namilyango replied with a drop goal before going on to find a try for an 11-6 lead at halftime.
SMACK then found and converted a try at the start of the second half. A spirited defensive display kept the hosts at bay.
