USSSA Weekend League
- Background
The USSSA Zone Weekend League is an initiative aimed at promoting continuous participation in sports among schools through organized weekend competitions and capacity building programs. The league seeks to strengthen sports development within the zones by equipping teachers and students with practical skills in coaching and officiation while providing regular competitive games for learners.
The concept is designed to be simple, practical, and easy to implement for secondary schools within the zone. Schools will compete at the district level in a localized, low cost format that minimizes travel expenses while ensuring regular participation and competitive balance. - Objectives of the Weekend League
The Weekend League will aim to: - Provide continuous games and competition for schools during the school term.
- Improve sports talent identification and development.
- Build the capacity of teachers and students in:
o Games officiation
o Coaching skills - Strengthen collaboration among schools and stakeholders.
- Promote discipline, teamwork, fitness, and leadership among learners.
- Increase participation of both boys and girls in school sports.
- Key Focus Areas
A. Capacity Building
Training courses will be conducted for teachers and selected students in:
Areas of Training
• Basic coaching techniques
• Rules and regulations of games
• Match officiation
• Event organization
• Athlete/player management
• Safety and first aid basics
B. Weekend Competitions
Regular weekend games will be organized among participating schools to ensure learners get continuous competition exposure.
Games may include;
• Football
• Netball
• Basketball
• Beach Soccer
• Athletics
