Mwiri, Sacred Heart Win Bronze As Cricket Makes Competitive FEASSA Debut

Busoga College Mwiri and Sacred Heart SS represented Uganda as cricket made its competitive debut at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.

Although cricket featured at the 2025 FEASSA Games in Kakamega, Kenya, it was only included as a demonstration sport. This year marked the first time cricket was played competitively at the regional school games.

Tanzania and Kenya fielded two teams in each gender category, with the teams competing in a round-robin format.

Busoga College Mwiri recorded three victories from four matches, with their only defeat coming against Tanzanian side Masechu.

Sacred Heart SS Gulu also suffered defeat in their opening match against a Tanzanian side but responded strongly, winning their next three games.

Both Ugandan representatives eventually settled for bronze medals in the historic first competitive cricket edition.

Players reflect on the experience.

Busoga College Mwiri vice-captain Kisubi Martin described the tournament as a valuable learning experience.

“The tournament has been a good one. There was a lot of experience to gain and learn from.”

On the lessons they picked up, Kisubi said the team learned the importance of fighting until the very end.

Mwiri captain Oketcho Jordan was equally positive about the competition.

“The tournament has been great; it is good competition. This side, we have been able to showcase our skills.”

He added that the team needs to improve its batting and ability to protect wickets.

“Among the lessons learned is we must score a lot more runs and also keep our wickets.”

For Sacred Heart SS Gulu captain Amono Ritah, the tournament was both enjoyable and memorable.

“Morogoro has been fun. We enjoyed being here and playing too.”

Vice-captain Akidi Petra said representing Uganda and their school made the experience special.

“We are happy to have been here representing not only our country but also our school.”

Sacred Heart player Ssesanga Amazing Nnungi praised her teammates for their effort throughout the competition.

“I would like to appreciate my team for giving the game their very best.”

Anek Patricia also reflected on the conditions during the tournament.

“Despite the weather being hot, it favored us to play our games.”

The bronze medals mark a significant milestone for Ugandan school cricket, with Mwiri and Sacred Heart becoming part of the history of cricket’s first competitive appearance at the FEASSA Games.
